Spectraflex amorphous solar technology The Spectraflex is a solar panel made from a spectrum splitting amorphous silicon cell design that converts very low levels of light to useable solar energy. Unlike other types of amorphous silicon technology the Spectraflex is very stable over many years where others degrade rapidly soon after deployment. Bypass diodes are connected across each cell so the panel is also shadow tolerant. Spectraflex flexibility Spectraflex 32 is a highly flexible panel constructed using UV stabilised polymers, bonded and stitched to a cushioned backing material. The whole unit can be curved round in either plane and direction and rolled to a diameter of just 30cm for storage and in use placed on to curved surfaces such as a sail boom or a coachroof. Built in diode also prevent current flowing out of the battery during hours of darkness, this means that Spectraflex can be connected direct to the battery. Please note asuitable solar charge controller may be required in some circumstances - see below. What size solar panel do I need? In the UK we recommend a minimum ratio of 10W (Watts) of solar panel to every 100Ah (Amp hours) capacity of battery; so a single 32W Spectraflex panel is suitable for maintenance of a 12V battery up to 320Ah capacity. Used at this ratio the solar panel will replace natural battery discharge typically experienced over the winter time and provide additional charge in the summer time. Generates up to 9Ah per day in UK summertime, 63Ah weekly - useful for charging batteries for weekend use and invaluable for topping up whilst underway. And, importantly, you’ll arrive to a charged battery! Do I need a charge controller? A solar charge controller (solar regulator) will manage battery charging and prevent battery overcharging if the solar panel is left connected to the battery for long periods unattended. If your battery is smaller than 320Ah capacity or you will be leaving the Spectraflex 32W connected to the battery and unattended we recommend the use of solar charge controller to prevent battery damage through overcharging. If you do require a solar charge controller the Solsum 5 and Solsum 6.6F are both suitable for use with a single 32W Spectraflex solar panel (use a Solsum 6.6F or Solsum 8.8F with 2 Spectraflex panels). Can I use multiple Spectraflex panels together? Spectraflex solar panels can be used together but are only suitable for 12V connection - connect in parallel (+ to +, - to -) to increase array wattage at 12V. These panels are also well suited to use in conjunction with Rutland wind chargers : Rutland 504 , Rutland 913 and Rutland FM910-3 .
