Energy Monitor Comparison

There is quite a range of electricity monitors available now, from the most basic plug-in meters, to more sophisticated wireless smart meters some of which even boast PC connectivity for detailed analysis of your historic energy use.

To help you choose what will work best for you we have put together two quick comparison tables in the pdf files below.

It may also help you to have a brief overview of the three main types of electricity monitor available...

Plug-in Electricity Monitors

Plug-in energy monitors do exactly what their name suggests. You plug them into a socket, plug a device into the monitor and it will display information about the energy being consumed. Most display instant and cumulative information of energy use in kWh. Some such as our Plug-in Electricity Monitor can also be set to display cost in £ and p.

We are often asked what the difference is between our two plug-in monitors. The cheaper model is better for most household / office situations as it can be programmed with a tariff and will display your energy use in £ as well as kWh. The more expensive monitor is slightly more accurate, measures Power Factor and energy use in VA, but can't display energy use in £. We sell many of these individually to householders but have found that this model also tends to be preferred by professional users and schools.

Wireless Energy Monitors

Wireless energy monitors  (sometimes referred to as smart meters ) monitor current via a sensor attached at your electricity meter and wirelessly transmit this information to a portable display unit that converts the data into meaningful values.

Instant information can normally be viewed in terms of kW, £:p / hour (at present usage) and Kg CO2 / hour (at present usage). Some energy monitors allow you to scroll through historical data stored in their memory.

Wireless monitors are a great way of getting a better understanding of where you use energy around your home or business.

The Owl Micro  is a great "starter" wireless energy monitor. It gives you instant information in kW, £ and  kg CO2 and is great value.

The Micro's big brother the Owl CM119  has a big clear display of instant and historical data and comes supplied with batteries making it an excellent value wireless monitor.

The Efergy Elite   (our most popular wireless electricity monitor) has similar functions to the the Owl CM119 but also displays your daily average energy use plus a graphical display of yesterday's and today's usage and deals with historical data in a more robust way.

Wireless Energy Monitors with PC Connectivity

Some wireless energy monitors, in addition to having a portable display, have the capability to link up with a PC to allow more in depth interrogation of historical data.

The Current Cost CC128 Envi  needs the addition of a Envi Data Cable  to allow data stored in the display unit's memory to be transferred to a PC. The data is in raw format and there is no software currently available from Current Cost, however, as the data is open source there are several excellent third party applications that are compatible and these can be downloaded from the Current Cost website.

The Efergy E2 eLink  offers all the benefits of a normal wireless energy monitor with similar display to the Efergy Elite  and Owl CM119  but with the added benefit of being able to download data to a PC for more in depth analysis. View historical data down to hourly intervals with the software included.

The Wattson  is a slightly different and very cool take on the wireless energy monitor display. As well as showing you your energy use in numbers it also glows different colours to communicate different levels of energy use. Also has PC link capability and historical data can be viewed down to 6 minute intervals using the excellent "Holmes" software included.
