Reducing Draughts
Where are draughts most likely? Typically draughts occur around doors and windows, through floorboards and poorly fitted skirting boards and loft hatches. How do I reduce draughts? Well you can shut the door for a start! Only joking. There are lots of places that can let in draughts and lots of ways of stopping them. Often gaps around door and window frames, skirting and between floorboards can be blocked with a suitable filler. Draughts between windows and doors and their frames can be fixed with a variety of products including plastic or foam strips, brushes and moulded rubber. Most DIY stores have a good selection. Don’t forget to do your letterbox and keyhole as well! How much can I save? According to the Energy Saving Trust you can save around £20 per year on your heating bills by reducing draughts around your home. You will also reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by around 140 kg. How is it installed ? Draught proofing is an easy DIY job. Identify where draughts are coming from and then simply pop down to your local DIY store and have a look for products that apply to your situation. Just be aware that maintaining some ventilation is important. The aim is to reduce major draughts not to hermetically seal your entire house! Adequate ventilation is of particular importance if you have a solid fuel fire, gas fire or boiler with an open flue. Back to Cheaper Utility Bills page. |
