Cavity Wall Insulation
What is a cavity wall insulation? Most houses built since the 1920's have walls built with an air cavity in between two layers of bricks. Cavity wall insulation fills the air cavity with an insulating material (there are various types) which can greatly reduce the amount of heat lost though the walls. This can have several benefits in addition to reducing your heating bills :
How much can I save ?
According to the Energy Saving Trust typically a third of heat loss in an un-insulated home is through the walls and cavity wall insulation could save you between £130 and £160 per year on you heating bills. Installation costs are typically £250 to £300 pounds so payback is achieved in just 2 years. In addition to this you will reducing your emissions of CO2 by approximately 1 tonne per year. How is it installed ?
Cavity wall insulation is installed by specialists who inject the insulation into the cavity through small holes made in the external walls. The holes are then filled to match your existing brick work as closely as possible. There is no mess made inside your house and the whole process can normally be completed in half a day at a cost of around £250 to £300. You can find a registered installer by contacting the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA). Back to Cheaper Utility Bills page. |
